ഈ ഉത്സവം ശക്തൻ തമ്പുരാന്റെ (കൊച്ചി മഹാരാജാവായിരുന്ന രാമവർമ്മ IX) ആശയമായിരുന്നു. അടുത്തുള്ള ആറാട്ടുപുഴ പൂരത്തിൽ പങ്കുചേരുന്നതിന് ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് അനുമതി നിഷേധിക്കപ്പെട്ടതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് 1796-ൽ ആണ് ഇത് ആരംഭിച്ചത്. പ്രധാന ആതിഥേയ ദേവനായ വടക്കുന്നാഥന് (ശിവൻ) ആദരവ് അർപ്പിക്കുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെ, ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച പ്രദർശനം കാഴ്ചവെക്കുന്നതിനായി അദ്ദേഹം പത്ത് ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളെ തിരുവമ്പാടി (പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ വിഭാഗം), പാറമേക്കാവ് (കിഴക്കൻ വിഭാഗം) എന്നിങ്ങനെ രണ്ട് പ്രധാന എതിരാളി ഗ്രൂപ്പുകളായി തിരിച്ച് ഏകോപിപ്പിച്ചു. തേക്കിൻകാട് മൈതാനമാണ് പ്രധാന വേദിയായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നത്. മലയാള മാസമായ മേടത്തിലെ (ഏപ്രിൽ/മെയ്) പൂരം നക്ഷത്രമാണ് ഉത്സവത്തിൻ്റെ പ്രധാന ദിവസം.

The festival was instituted by Sakthan Thampuran to challenge a perceived slight after continuous rains caused local temples to be late and denied entry to the then-largest festival, Arattupuzha Pooram. He created a new festival to unite the temples in and around Thrissur.

Established in 1796 by the Maharaja of Cochin, it replaced the Arattupuzha Pooram as the largest temple festival in Kerala. It is a symbolic meeting ('Pooram') of deities from ten temples to pay homage to the presiding deity, Lord Vadakkunnathan (Shiva).

Thrissur Pooram is famous for its secular nature, with various religious communities actively participating in its preparations, such as providing materials for the ornamental umbrellas (Kudamattam) and Pandal (temporary stage) works.

The magnificent procession of 30 caparisoned elephants, the rhythmic competition of **Kudamattam**, the mesmerizing **Ilanjithara Melam** (percussion ensemble), and the grand fireworks show (**Vedikettu**).
