Attukal Bhagavathy Temple has been an important center of worship in southern Kerala for centuries. Over time, the Pongala ritual evolved from a local devotional practice into one of Kerala’s largest temple festivals. The participation of women steadily increased each year, eventually gaining international recognition in 2009 when the festival entered the Guinness World Records for the largest gathering of women for a religious event. Today, Attukal Pongala is recognized as a major spiritual, cultural, and tourism event in Kerala.
The festival attracts millions of devotees from Kerala and neighboring states every year. Heavy crowd, traffic diversions, and special security arrangements are common during the Pongala day. Temporary cooking hearths extend across roads and public spaces throughout Thiruvananthapuram city. The event is internationally recognized by Guinness World Records for the largest congregation of women participating in a religious activity.
According to legend, Goddess Attukalamma is believed to be an incarnation of Kannaki, the heroine of the Tamil epic Silappathikaram. After destroying Madurai to avenge the injustice done to her husband Kovalan, Kannaki traveled toward Kodungallur and rested at Attukal. The local people recognized her divine presence and later established the temple in her honor. The Pongala ritual symbolizes devotion, purity, prosperity, and the protective blessings of the goddess.
