History

The Ancient Jain Temple of Sulthan Bathery is believed to have been constructed around the 13th century by Jain settlers who migrated from Karnataka to Wayanad. The architecture of the temple shows influences of Vijayanagara and Hoysala styles, featuring huge granite blocks, intricately carved stone pillars, and traditional Jain structural elements. Dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras, the temple once served as a prominent religious and cultural center for the Jain community in the Malabar region. Over the centuries, the temple witnessed various political and cultural changes, including the rule of local dynasties and the military campaigns of Tipu Sultan. Despite invasions and the passage of time, the structure survived due to its exceptional stone construction. Recognizing its archaeological and historical importance, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) later declared it a protected monument. Today, the temple stands as one of Kerala’s most significant Jain archaeological sites and a proud symbol of Wayanad’s diverse cultural heritage.

Remarks

The temple is widely admired for its strong stone architecture, peaceful surroundings, and historical significance. Its beautifully carved granite pillars and traditional Jain construction style attract historians, tourists, and devotees alike. The monument is considered one of the finest examples of Jain influence in Kerala and remains a major heritage attraction in Wayanad. The temple is also closely associated with Tipu Sultan’s military history, which later influenced the naming of the town “Sulthan Bathery.”

Story

According to local legends and historical accounts, Jain monks and traders traveling through the ancient Karnataka–Wayanad trade routes established this temple centuries ago as a place of worship and spiritual learning. Over time, the temple became an important center for the Jain community living in the region. During the Mysore invasions, Tipu Sultan is believed to have used the temple structure as a storage place for his army’s ammunition and batteries due to its strong granite construction. This eventually led to the place being called “Battery,” which later evolved into the present-day name “Sulthan Bathery.” Even today, the temple silently narrates stories of spirituality, trade, war, and cultural transformation.
