Story
According to temple legends, the idol worshipped at Guruvayur is extremely ancient and sacred. It is believed that Lord Vishnu gave this idol to Lord Brahma for worship. Later, the idol came into the possession of Lord Krishna at Dwaraka. After Lord Krishna departed from Earth and Dwaraka was about to be submerged into the sea, Guru Brihaspati (the teacher of the Devas) and Vayu (the wind god) were instructed to rescue the idol and find a holy place for consecration. They travelled across Bharata and finally reached Kerala, where they met Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi performing meditation. Shiva advised them to install the idol there and blessed the place. Since the idol was installed by Guru and Vayu, the place became known as βGuru-Vayu-oor,β which later became Guruvayur. Another famous story connected to the temple is about Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri, who suffered from severe rheumatism after taking on the illness of his guru. Staying at Guruvayur, he composed the devotional masterpiece Narayaneeyam over 100 days. On completing the final verse, Lord Guruvayurappan is believed to have appeared before him and cured his illness. The temple is also associated with the saint Poonthanam Namboodiri, whose pure devotion became a symbol of true bhakti beyond scholarly knowledge.
