Story
One of the most famous legends associated with the temple is the origin of the sacred Saptha Theerthams, the seven holy water springs found within the temple premises. In ancient times, a temple servant woman who carried water daily from distant places became old and weak. Unable to continue her difficult journey, she prayed sincerely before Lord Shiva seeking relief. One night, she received a divine vision warning her not to witness the mysterious events taking place inside the temple at midnight. However, when she later heard a terrifying sound from the temple, curiosity led her to look through a small opening in the door. She witnessed an intense divine light beyond human imagination and immediately lost her eyesight. The following morning, devotees discovered that the huge black rocks near the temple had split apart and crystal-clear water springs had emerged from within them. These sacred springs became known as the Saptha Theerthams and continue to flow even today. Another legend says that a vessel from the temple once fell into these waters and later reached the sea, where local fishermen recovered it and respectfully returned it to the temple authorities, who honored them with gifts and rewards.
