History

Sree Valayanad Devi Temple has deep historical roots connected with the medieval Zamorin dynasty that ruled the Malabar region from Kozhikode. The temple became the royal family shrine and spiritual center of the Zamorins, who considered Goddess Valayanad Bhagavathi their protector and guardian deity. Over centuries, the temple evolved into an important center of Shakta worship in Kerala. The temple follows ancient tantric rituals preserved through generations by hereditary Pidarar Brahmin priests and traditional Moosad families associated with the temple. Unlike many conventional temples, Valayanad Devi Temple openly preserves older ritual traditions connected with Saktheya worship, including Guruthy rituals and non-vegetarian tantric practices. The temple’s architecture, sacred grove atmosphere, Sapthamathrukkal carvings, and ritual heritage reflect a unique blend of Kerala temple culture, royal history, and ancient spiritual traditions that continue to attract devotees and researchers from across India.

Remarks

The temple holds a unique position among Kerala’s Devi temples due to its association with Kashmir-based tantric worship traditions and the rare Rurujit style of Saktheya pooja. The sanctum houses the sacred Sreechakra installed by Sivayogi Thayyavur Sivasankar, symbolizing the eternal presence of the Goddess. Tuesdays and Fridays are considered highly auspicious for worship, attracting thousands of devotees seeking protection, prosperity, courage, and spiritual blessings. Rituals such as Guruthy Tharpanam and Kalamezhuthupattu preserve ancient Kerala tantric traditions that continue to thrive in the temple even today.

Story

According to temple legend, the Zamorin king of Kozhikode once suffered defeat in battle against Valluva Konathiri, the ruler of Valluvanad, despite possessing greater military strength. Realizing that the divine blessings of Goddess Bhagavathi were protecting Valluvanad, the Zamorin secretly traveled to Thirumandhamkunnu Temple and performed intense penance before the Goddess. Pleased with his devotion, the Goddess agreed to accompany him to Kozhikode. During their journey, the Goddess instructed the Zamorin never to look back to confirm her presence. As they traveled, the king heard the divine sound of the Goddess’s anklets following him. After some time, the sound suddenly stopped, and out of anxiety and devotion, the Zamorin turned back. Immediately, the Goddess declared that she would go no further. However, impressed by the king’s devotion, she removed one of her bangles (Vala) and threw it toward a distant place. The bangle rotated in the air for seven days before finally falling at the present temple location. The place where the bangle fell later became known as “Thiru Valayanad,” meaning the sacred land of the bangle.
