Story
According to temple legend, the Zamorin king of Kozhikode once suffered defeat in battle against Valluva Konathiri, the ruler of Valluvanad, despite possessing greater military strength. Realizing that the divine blessings of Goddess Bhagavathi were protecting Valluvanad, the Zamorin secretly traveled to Thirumandhamkunnu Temple and performed intense penance before the Goddess. Pleased with his devotion, the Goddess agreed to accompany him to Kozhikode. During their journey, the Goddess instructed the Zamorin never to look back to confirm her presence. As they traveled, the king heard the divine sound of the Goddess’s anklets following him. After some time, the sound suddenly stopped, and out of anxiety and devotion, the Zamorin turned back. Immediately, the Goddess declared that she would go no further. However, impressed by the king’s devotion, she removed one of her bangles (Vala) and threw it toward a distant place. The bangle rotated in the air for seven days before finally falling at the present temple location. The place where the bangle fell later became known as “Thiru Valayanad,” meaning the sacred land of the bangle.
