Adoor Mahalingeshwara Temple is an ancient Shiva temple located on the southern bank of the Payaswini River in Kasaragod district, Kerala. The temple is renowned for its traditional Kerala-style architecture, copper-covered three-tiered Gaja Prishtha sreekovil, ancient inscriptions, and association with the Kiratha Yudham legend from the Mahabharata.

History

The temple is believed to date back to the early medieval period and is considered over 1000 years old. Epigraphic records and inscriptions found at the temple are associated with the Western Chalukya period, particularly King Kirthivarman II (8th century CE). The temple later developed into an important Shaiva pilgrimage center in North Kerala.

Story

According to legend, the temple is associated with the โ€œKiratha Yudhamโ€ episode from the Mahabharata. Arjuna performed penance to obtain the divine Pasupathastra weapon from Lord Shiva. Shiva appeared before Arjuna in the form of a hunter (Kiratha), fought him, and later blessed him with the celestial weapon after revealing his true form.
