History

Thirunelli Mahavishnu Temple is believed to have origins dating back several centuries and is regarded as one of the oldest Vishnu temples in Kerala. Historical records and inscriptions from the 9th to 11th centuries mention royal grants and patronage offered to the temple by the Kulashekhara dynasty and the Kottayam Rajas. Over the centuries, the shrine developed into an important spiritual centre for devotees travelling through the Western Ghats. The temple architecture reflects the classical Kerala temple style, featuring granite pillars, traditional woodwork, and copper-covered roofs. Despite the passage of time, Thirunelli continues to preserve its ancient rituals, traditions, and spiritual significance.

Thirunelli Mahavishnu Temple is considered a highly sacred pilgrimage centre where devotees from different parts of South India arrive to perform ancestral rites and seek blessings from Lord Mahavishnu. The temple is admired for its peaceful Sahyadri mountain setting, granite-pillared structure, copper-roofed sanctum, and ancient stone pathways leading to the sacred stream. Pilgrims believe that bathing in the Papanasini stream washes away sins and grants spiritual purification. The temple remains an important centre for devotion, meditation, and traditional Hindu rituals.

According to legend, Lord Brahma once lost his divine power to create the world because of a curse. Seeking redemption, Brahma travelled through the Sahyadri mountains and discovered a sacred rock glowing with divine energy. He worshipped Lord Vishnu at this place and installed the idol of Mahavishnu on the holy rock. Pleased with Brahma’s devotion, Lord Vishnu restored his powers and blessed the place as a sacred land for liberation and salvation. It is believed that performing pithru karma and ancestral offerings here grants peace and moksha to departed souls, making Thirunelli one of the most revered places for such rituals in Kerala.
