Story
According to temple legend, the origin of Thiruvegapura is connected with Lord Shiva and Garuda, the divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Garuda brought a sacred Shiva Lingam from the Himalayas for consecration at this holy place. As the auspicious time for installation was approaching quickly, Lord Shiva instructed Garuda to travel faster, saying “Vegam Parakkanam,” meaning “fly swiftly.” Over time, the region came to be known as “Thiru Vegam Para,” which later evolved into the name Thiruvegappura. Another traditional belief says that Sage Kapila Maharshi consecrated the Vishnu idol here, making the temple a sacred center where devotees of Shiva and Vishnu worshipped together in harmony. The Sankaranarayana form worshipped in the temple symbolizes the eternal truth that Shiva and Vishnu are not separate but manifestations of the same supreme divine energy.
