History

Thiruvegapura Sree Sankaranarayana Temple is believed to have a history spanning several centuries and is regarded as one of the important Mahakshetrams of Kerala. Historically, the temple was an important center for Vedic learning, temple rituals, and classical art traditions. The temple’s ancient Koothambalam (traditional performance hall) reflects the cultural richness of Kerala’s temple heritage and indicates the importance of ritual arts like Koothu and Koodiyattam in earlier times. The temple architecture, inscriptions, and traditional construction style reveal influences from medieval Kerala temple culture. Over the centuries, the temple became a major spiritual destination for both Shaiva and Vaishnava devotees due to its rare Hari-Hara concept. Today, the temple continues to preserve its ancient customs, rituals, and sacred traditions under the administration of the Malabar Devaswom Board, while remaining an important spiritual and cultural landmark of Palakkad district.

Remarks

Thiruvegapura Sree Sankaranarayana Temple is considered one of the oldest and most unique temples in central Kerala. The temple is renowned for its rare Sankaranarayana (Hari-Hara) deity, representing the unity of Shiva and Vishnu as one supreme divine power. The temple complex reflects classic Kerala temple architecture with ancient wooden structures, traditional mural elements, and a spiritually uplifting riverside setting. It is one of the few temples in Kerala having three separate flag masts and multiple sanctums dedicated to different manifestations of divinity. The temple is closely associated with Vedic traditions, temple arts, and ancient rituals preserved through generations. Major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri and the annual temple festival attract large numbers of devotees from across Kerala. The calm atmosphere, sacred river surroundings, and historic importance make the temple a highly revered pilgrimage center in the Valluvanad region.

Story

According to temple legend, the origin of Thiruvegapura is connected with Lord Shiva and Garuda, the divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Garuda brought a sacred Shiva Lingam from the Himalayas for consecration at this holy place. As the auspicious time for installation was approaching quickly, Lord Shiva instructed Garuda to travel faster, saying “Vegam Parakkanam,” meaning “fly swiftly.” Over time, the region came to be known as “Thiru Vegam Para,” which later evolved into the name Thiruvegappura. Another traditional belief says that Sage Kapila Maharshi consecrated the Vishnu idol here, making the temple a sacred center where devotees of Shiva and Vishnu worshipped together in harmony. The Sankaranarayana form worshipped in the temple symbolizes the eternal truth that Shiva and Vishnu are not separate but manifestations of the same supreme divine energy.
