Story
Several legends are associated with the origin of Ettumanoor temple and its name. One belief says the name originated from “Maan Ooru,” meaning “Land of Deer,” while another tradition states that Lord Shiva appeared here in eight divine forms, leading to the name “Ettumanoor.” Temple traditions also mention that the Pandavas and sage Vyasa worshipped Lord Shiva at this sacred shrine during ancient times. The most famous legend is connected to the “Ezhara Ponnana.” According to tradition, Marthanda Varma vowed to offer golden elephants to Lord Shiva after receiving divine blessings. Another popular story says the golden elephants were originally intended for Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, but when the royal soldiers rested at Ettumanoor temple overnight, snakes mysteriously appeared around the golden elephants. Astrologers interpreted this as a divine sign that Ettumanoorappan wished to keep the offering there permanently. Some traditions also connect the offering with Travancore’s victory during periods of war and political unrest.
