Story
Sree Mridanga Shaileswari Temple is surrounded by many sacred legends and mystical beliefs. According to tradition, the Goddess manifested herself as a divine Mizhavu or Mridangam-shaped rock on the hill, after which Lord Parashurama consecrated the temple and established Durga worship here. Another important legend is associated with the fierce warrior form of the Goddess known as “Porkkali,” who was worshipped by ancient rulers and warriors before battles for victory and protection. The temple also shares a deep connection with Kathakali history, as it is believed that Kottayam Thampuran received divine inspiration from the Goddess here while creating the feminine costume style of Kathakali. A famous modern legend tells of thieves repeatedly failing to steal the temple idol due to mysterious supernatural experiences, eventually forcing them to return it, further strengthening devotees’ belief in the divine power of the Goddess.
