History

Sree Mridanga Shaileswari Temple has a rich history deeply connected with Kerala’s royal heritage, spirituality, and classical arts. The temple was the family shrine of the Kottayam royal family and later became the revered family deity of Veera Pazhassi Raja, the legendary “Lion of Kerala.” The temple is also closely associated with the origin and development of Kathakali, as Kottayam Thampuran is believed to have refined Kathakali art forms here with divine inspiration from the Goddess herself. Several famous Kathakali Aattakathas were also composed in the spiritual atmosphere of this temple. A famous modern legend tells of thieves repeatedly failing to steal the temple idol due to mysterious supernatural experiences, eventually forcing them to return it, further strengthening devotees’ belief in the divine power of the Goddess.
