History

Madayi Kavu has a history dating back many centuries and is regarded as one of the ancient Bhagavathy kavus of Kerala. The temple was once associated with the Chirakkal royal family and later came under the Malabar Devaswom Board. Historical records mention that during Hyder Ali’s invasion of Malabar in the 18th century, the temple was desecrated, after which local warriors protected and restored its sanctity. Over time, the temple became an important spiritual and cultural center of North Kerala, preserving ancient Shakta and tantric traditions.

Remarks

The temple is situated on the historic Madayipara hill near Pazhayangadi in Kannur district. It is famous for its strong spiritual atmosphere, ancient tantric traditions, and rituals associated with Bhadrakali worship. Devotees believe the Goddess has immense divine power and seek blessings for protection, courage, and removal of negative energies. The temple is also closely connected with the cultural and royal heritage of North Kerala.

Story

According to legend, Goddess Bhadrakali came to Madayi after defeating the demon Darika. She requested Lord Shiva to remain near her, and Parashurama later consecrated the sacred shrine on Madayipara. Another popular belief says the Goddess originally resided at the Rajarajeshwara Temple in Taliparamba, but due to her fierce nature, a separate shrine was established for her at Madayi. The temple is traditionally believed to possess divine powers capable of removing black magic and evil influences.
