Located in Taliparamba in Kannur district, the temple has a rich history dating back several centuries. The temple received royal patronage from the ancient Mooshika and Kolathiri dynasties, who helped preserve and develop the shrine. Over the years, Sree Rajarajeshwara Temple became not only a major spiritual center but also an important hub for Sanskrit learning, Vedic discussions, and traditional scholarly debates in Kerala.
The temple is regarded as one of the greatest Shiva kshetras in Kerala and South India. Devotees believe that prayers offered here help resolve major life problems such as incurable diseases, family disputes, and legal issues. A unique tradition allows women to enter the temple only after the night-time “Athazha Pooja,” when the deity is believed to assume the gentle Sambasiva form. The temple was also historically famous for the “Pattathanam,” a prestigious gathering and debate of Sanskrit scholars.
According to temple tradition, Sage Agastya played a major role in the consecration of the temple. The present Shiva Lingam is believed to be the third installation at this sacred site, while the earlier Lingams were worshipped and later withdrawn by divine beings of cosmic importance. It is believed that during the night, Lord Shiva manifests in the peaceful Sambasiva form, which is associated with the temple’s unique customs and rituals.
