Story
According to temple legend, King Mandhatha Maharshi of the Surya dynasty renounced his kingdom and performed deep penance to Lord Shiva at Mount Kailash. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva gifted him a sacred Shiva Lingam that was worshipped by Goddess Parvathi herself. Carrying the holy Lingam on his head, Mandhatha travelled south and reached the hill now known as Thirumandhamkunnu. As soon as the Lingam was placed on the hill, it became permanently fixed to the earth. When Goddess Parvathi realized that the sacred Lingam had been given away, she sent Bhadrakali and divine attendants to retrieve it. A fierce celestial battle followed between the forces accompanying Mandhatha and Bhadrakali’s army. Finally, the divine Trimurthis — Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva — along with Goddess Parvathi appeared before them. Parvathi declared that she would remain eternally within the Lingam at Thirumandhamkunnu, while Bhadrakali would also be worshipped there beside her. Thus the sacred shrine became a divine center of Shiva-Shakti worship. This legend is deeply connected with the temple’s rituals, festivals, and ancient customs that continue even today.
