History

The history of Thrikkandiyur Shiva Temple dates back more than a thousand years and is traditionally linked to the reign of Cheraman Perumal in 823 CE. Over the centuries, the temple became an important centre of worship, culture, and community life in the Tirur region. Initially, the temple administration was managed by 48 Brahmin families known as Shivadiwjanambi. Later, control passed to the Alathiyoor Namboothiri Sabha and eventually to the Vettathu royal family. During subsequent periods, the temple came under the protection and patronage of the Zamorin rulers through arrangements associated with the British East India Company. Historical records and local traditions also mention that the temple suffered destruction during the invasions of Tipu Sultan. However, the temple was later rebuilt and restored through the efforts of devoted patrons and local philanthropists, including Mandayapurathu Krishna Menon, Vella Namboothiri of Panniyoor, and Hydrose Kutty of Chavakkad. Today, Thrikkandiyur Shiva Temple stands as a timeless symbol of Kerala’s rich spiritual heritage, resilience, devotion, and architectural brilliance.

Story

According to temple legends, the Shiva Lingam at Thrikkandiyur was consecrated by Sage Parashurama, the mythical creator of Kerala. The temple is closely connected with powerful Shaiva traditions and mystical beliefs. Local stories narrate that the divine energy emitted from Lord Shiva’s third eye became so intense that the surrounding region experienced unbearable heat and spiritual fire. To reduce this immense energy, devotees and sages created the enormous sacred pond beside the temple, which symbolises purification, balance, and divine calmness. Another popular belief states that Ambala Kulangara Bhagavathi, whose shrine is situated nearby, is considered the divine daughter of Lord Shiva, making the temple complex spiritually unique and deeply revered among devotees.
