History

According to temple tradition, Adi Shankaracharya consecrated the temple during his spiritual journey across Kerala. It is believed that while travelling through the region, he heard a divine voice from the earth at Kadampuzha. Guided by this divine presence, he dug the ground and discovered the self-manifested power of the Goddess. Since the deity is believed to have emerged naturally from the earth, no idol was installed inside the sanctum sanctorum. Worship continues to be performed directly to the sacred hole in the ground, symbolizing the eternal presence of Devi. Over the centuries, the temple became an important pilgrimage centre under the administration of the Malabar Devaswom Board. Today, Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple remains one of Keralaโ€™s most visited and revered temples, preserving ancient rituals, traditions, and deep spiritual faith.

Story

The central legend of Kadampuzha Bhagavathy Temple is connected with the famous Kirathamoorthy episode from the Mahabharata. Arjuna, one of the Pandavas, performed severe penance to obtain the divine weapon Pasupatastra from Lord Shiva. To test Arjunaโ€™s devotion, courage, and determination, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi appeared before him disguised as a hunter and huntress. At the same time, a demon in the form of a wild boar appeared in the forest, and both Arjuna and the hunter shot arrows at it. A dispute arose over who killed the boar, leading to a fierce battle between Arjuna and the hunter. Though Arjuna fought bravely, he eventually realized that the hunter was none other than Lord Shiva himself. Shiva and Parvathi then revealed their divine forms and blessed Arjuna with the Pasupatastra weapon. Temple tradition believes that this sacred event took place at Kadampuzha, and the Goddess here is worshipped as the divine huntress who accompanied Lord Shiva.
