History

The temple shares a strong historical connection with the Nilambur Kovilakam, one of the most respected royal houses of Malabar. Historical records and local traditions suggest that the royal family played a significant role in maintaining the temple, preserving its rituals, and organizing its famous annual festivals. The Nilambur Pattu Utsavam is historically documented in Nilambur Kovilakam records as “Pattu Atiyanthiram.” The word “Pattu” refers to the sacred devotional songs performed during the festival mainly by traditional tribal communities such as the Kurup or Kuruppanmar. These songs preserve ancient oral traditions and indigenous musical heritage that have been passed down through generations. Over the centuries, the temple evolved into an important spiritual and cultural center of Nilambur, attracting devotees, artists, historians, and researchers interested in Kerala’s tribal traditions and temple culture.

Story

According to Kerala temple legends, Lord Vettakkorumakan was born when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi assumed the form of Kirata hunters. The name “Vettakkorumakan” literally means “Son of the Hunter.” The deity is regarded as a powerful warrior form embodying bravery, protection, and righteousness. A popular belief links the origin of the deity with the famous Kiratarjuneeya episode from the Mahabharata, where Lord Shiva appeared before Arjuna in the disguise of a tribal hunter to test his devotion and courage. After revealing his divine form, Shiva blessed the world with the powerful presence of Vettakkorumakan, who later became widely worshipped in Malabar regions. The deity is also traditionally associated with forest communities, hunting traditions, martial spirit, and guardian worship practices of North Kerala.
